Artist Statement of Jennie McCall

Through the medium of textiles, for many years Jennie successfully produced work that was influenced by her love of flora and fauna. Because of her other fascination for classical and Italian Renaissance sculpture, Jennie has also produced figurative forms in various media.

It is in recent years that the figurative has played an even greater part in her art. The most influential artist in Jennie`s life is the French sculptor Aristide Maillol. The simplicity of his sensitive female nudes engage Jennie for their grace, sensuality and affective impact. Maillol`s females continue to be a source of inspiration for Jennie, providing a vehicle for her own emotional expression seen in her male and female nude figures. The intention behind this particular work is to express the spiritual through the sensual; in essence, the fragile human condition.

A recent departure from the human form has taken Jennie to her delight in the equine form. Her horses are expressed as creatures of the earth and water, the temporal and the spiritual: creatures of chess-like knights, and creatures of the sensuous, like those of Poseidon. The integrity of each of these sculptures is in their subtle elegance and craftsmanship.

Jennie`s production methods are those of the traditionally hand built, being made of frost-proof stoneware and porcelain. Coiling, slabbing, moulding, the application of oxides and glazes all contribute to Jennie`s stylisation of each unique sculpture.

Most recent work is loosely based upon chess knights which are, in effect, static War Horses. These imposing creatures are intended to stand sentinel in a garden, a park, on a path or patio. They invite the purchaser to participate in their story. The Water Horses are the antithesis of the statuesque equines. Animated by their grace and liquid-like lines, they can contribute to a resplendent water feature, particularly when set in a group of three or five. Alternatively, they would grace any space, whether indoors or in a garden.

Jennie is presently working on a collection of work based on the sea to be cast in bronze.
